The economy is one of the subjects on all of my customer's minds, and just about without exception, every call I make on someone has them asking me how I am finding the business environment in my travels around my sales territory.
In fall 2008 there was a great amount of angst our there; it seemed that no one could predict with any certainty what their next month's revenues would look like, and the general public was spooked by the media's constant blaring of all of the foreclosure news, the banking crisis, and the drop in the stock market. The was a lot of concern for business owners and the public in general, and rightly so.
At that time, most of my client base reported to me that their business was very irregular. There would be several very busy days in their shops, followed by almost nothing for a week. Then, the scenario would flip flop. There was no continuity to anyone's projections, or to their customer's showing up on their doorstep.
Here we are, nearly one year later. Business has not necessarily improved, although there are signs that things are slowly being to come back a little. I think the jobless numbers, which continue to worsen, are a sign of ongoing problems that are not going to be solved anytime soon. But, most of my customers are reporting that they are beginning to see some old clients of theirs return, and that their business has leveled off, without the peaks and valleys they were seeing in fall '08.
Is the economy improving? My personal take on this is no, it isn't. But the buying public has discovered that they still have houses; they still have employment; and they are tired of being frightened, and have decided that spending will not send them off to the poor house, at least not today.
Hopefully, what I am seeing is the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. I pray that is isn't the headlamp of that freight train that just rounded the curve....
